Put the wonderful taste of yesterday, in your heirloom tomato garden today.  There is a good reason why these superb tomatoes are making their way back into today's world.  Our seasoned gardeners and the farmers are sharing their bounty in the markets and some grocery stores.  These people are proud of their heirloom tomatoes and want to share what they already know, the "exquisite" taste.  We all are accustomed to the hybrid tomato that we buy in our markets.  You remember, that round, red, no taste veggie.  Give yourself a break and just try the heirloom tomato.  We really think you will become a lover of these "little jewels".

Some people say the heirloom tomato is a fruit.  Others say its is a veggie.  The fact is, it was always called a fruit.  But in 1893, the Suprene Court passed a law calling the tomato a vegetable.  The biggest thing the heirloom tomato has is the marvelous "wow factor" taste.  So, whatever you want to call this tomato, fruit or veggie. your answer will always be right.

There is a lot of controversy over what makes a heirloom tomato. Some have the opinion that it has to be 50 years old. Others say the have to be over a 100 years old. There are even those that think that the heirloom tomato came into being after WW2. The fact is, in our opinion. The heirloom tomato has been handed down from family to family, generation to generation. This makes the tomato a true heirloom.

When I was doing my research on this wonderful veggie, I came across an article titled “Ugly Ripe”.  I was really amazed at all the sizes and shapes of these tomatoes.  But after reading all the information, I found that this so called ugly tomato was how mother nature decided this veggie should be.  How else would it become the talk of the tomato world?

Whether you live in a house, condo, apartment, city, or rural area, you can plant that heirloom tomato garden. Do you think you really want to start your own heirloom tomato garden? Whatever you decide to do, there are a few things you need to consider. You will need a garden space with a lot of sunlight, good soil, fertilizer, tomato seeds or plants, and some good tools.
