What are heirloom tomatoes? The most awesome tasting tomatoes in the world of gardening. If you have not had the pleasure of eating this one of a kind tomato, you better prepare your mouth for a special treat, the "wow factor" taste.
The heirloom tomato is an open-pollinated cultivar of fruit. This simply means that Mother Nature, with the help of her friends, the birds, bees, and the wind, pollinate these little jewels of tomatoes. This guarantees, the same flavor every season.
To be a true heirloom, the tomato has to be at least 50 years old or older. They are handed down from family to family, for generations. This giving of tomato seeds was really a true gift of love.
I remember my grandpa planting heirloom tomatoes every season. The biggest surprise to me was the "funky" shapes they grew in. Some were tiny and round like a marble's and others grew up to 2 lbs. The funniest looking tomato looked like a "sausage."
The colors of these tomatoes were so beautiful! I really did pay attention to grandpa's garden when his green tomatoes starting turning all these different colors.
I don't know the actual count of all the colors there are in this type of tomato. They come in yellow, orange, pink, white, green, purple, chocolate, green striped red and yellow and yes, even black.
These tomato colors are encoded in each varieties ancestry. Make sure you try to taste the different colors, they all have their own flavor. I think you will be very pleased with the true taste.
These "funky little gems" even have their own names. Brandywine, which seem to be one of the biggest favorites. It is like a big beef stake, firm meaty tomato, in colors of red, yellow , orange, pink and purple.
In my opinion, you should try Green Zebra, Cherokee purple, Black Krim, Paul Robeson, Mortgage Lifter, and Stupis. They all have their own flavor, but that is a treat you need to explore.
There are over 400 different variety of heirloom tomato seeds. These seeds are all open pollinated and are easy to grow. Don't be daunted by the heirloom name. Give yourself a treat and grow some heirloom tomatoes next season.
Some people are going back to the simple way of life. Some out of a sheer need to feed their family. They are wanting to plant their own gardens. What ever their reason, I say, PLANT A GARDEN.
Working in a garden with your family, is one of the best experiences you will ever have. If your children are part of this venture, what a great way to start "memories."
